Hello ,
Does a sense of belonging impact your health and wellbeing?
I believe a resounding YES!
"We cannot separate the importance of a sense of belonging from our physical and mental health. The social ties that accompany a sense of belonging are a protective factor helping manage stress and other behavioral issues. When we feel we have support and are not alone, we are more resilient, often coping more effectively with difficult times in our lives. Coping well with hardships decreases the physical and mental effects of these situations." Read more HERE.
As we all know and continue to learn stress, isolation and lack of the sense of belonging negatively impacts your bodily functions through the dys-regulation of your stress response system in your body. This move the needle toward DIS-EASE. On the flip-side resilience, connection and a sense of belonging move the trajectory of health towards vitality and longevity. Last week at group visit we discussed the limbic system and tools to retrain the brain and soothe the hyper-vigilance of your limbic system (our body's danger radar), this has a cascading effect on all systems in your body to begin to heal. This week we will continue the conversation about stress and the body and learn how the brain is truly where this dys-regulation begins way before the adrenals.
Life is made up of a full spectrum of experiences, emotions and choices. We can't undo past experiences but we can choose what lens we look through and tools that support the impact that past traumatic or challenging situations have on our physical body.
Belonging, community and social connection all move the needle toward health and vitality!
“Belonging is being part of something bigger than yourself. But it’s also the courage to stand alone, and to belong to yourself above all else.” – Dr. Brené Brown.
I am thrilled to share a very special project on belonging brought to you by Elizabeth Joselyn (my amazing sister) and Greenwood elementary. Through collaboration with Nicole Burton, artist (artist in residency program), the seeds of belonging are deeply planted in these humans through this experience and the incredible mural they walk by daily.
Grab a cup of tea, settle and enjoy the following video where the students explored this very question "what does it mean to belong".
Joyfully,
