The Brain Changes With Menstruation!

Neuroscientists at the University of California Santa Barbara have documented brain-wide structural changes that correlate with the hormone fluctuations across the menstrual cycle.

Wow.

This is amazing because it might help to explain why cycling females notice changes in their mood and mental function at different times of the month.

The study is not yet peer reviewed, but you can read a summary of it here.

If you are a human that menstruates..... this is not likely news, but definitely validation 😉

Functional Medicine Insights

Cortisol Disruption Can Be the Root Cause

Did you know that the stress hormone cortisol is released on a 24-hour rhythm?

Here’s what it should look like:

☀️ Cortisol peaks within 30 minutes of waking to kickstart the body for the day.

⛅ Levels decline throughout the afternoon and into the evening.

🌙 Cortisol is lowest at midnight to allow for restful sleep.

But if stress or lifestyle disrupt this natural rhythm…

Cortisol can have a flipped pattern, making you feel tired in the morning and wired at night.

It can be persistently high, making you anxious or sleepless.

Or it can be persistently low, making you fatigued and moody.

Disrupted cortisol is a significant root causes of physiologic dysfunction and illness that I see in my patients. I am continually assessing the individual and finding specific ways to support balance.

Follow ISH on Instagram for this month’s series on stress & stress hormones. I’ll be breaking down the science and sharing my top tips for breaking the cycle of stress.

Of note and a topic for another time, Melatonin, aka the darkness hormone, has a 24 hour rhythm and it is the reverse of our cortisol rhythm! When one is out of balance, the other often follows suit.

The cortisol and melatonin dance, when in balance sleep and energy typically improves!

Health Tip

Left Nostril Breathing to Stop Stress

Have you heard of left nostril breathing?

🧘‍♀️ Yogic traditions teach that the left relates to moon energy: cooling, calming, and reflective. The right relates to sun energy: fiery, energizing, and awakening. So, the yogic practice of left nostril breathing is thought to have a calming effect on the body.

🧠 A more science-y way of explaining this is that left nostril breathing puts the body into a parasympathetic state (instead of the “fight or flight” mode of the sympathetic state). Studies have even shown that left nostril breathing changes brainwave activity on EEG. Pretty cool!

Left nostril breathing is simple:

Just press your right thumb against your right nostril, and breathe slowly and deeply through the left nostril.

That’s it!
