Hello ,

I recently returned from Panama, where I was attending my annual yoga retreat. I have prioritized this almost annually for close to 20 years, to meet with a group of women to disconnect, reconnect, rest, move, play and explore.  It is a time to reflect on my past year, plant the seeds to create what's next and ultimately to settle my system so I can continue to show up in my work, relationships and to myself!

This year I was honored to share a workshop on PEP!

Shapeshifting more PEP, Playful Expansive Pleasure, into your moments.

It is a neurobiological fact that we are ALLWays creating something both consciously and unconsciously.

What if that something was pleasure?

PEP - Let's break it down with some basic definitions

Play - engage in activity for enJOYment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose

Expand - become or make larger or more extensive.

Pleasure - a feeling of happy satisfaction and enJOYment.

In preparation for this workshop I began to look a bit more at pleasure and of course like many things this created more questions then answers!

What is pleasure?

What is the neurobiology of pleasure?

What is the pleasure / pain relationship?

And why neuro-chemically do we need both?

What is the role of dopamine and pleasure?

From Wikipedia:

Pleasure is experience that feels good, that involves the enjoyment of something. It contrasts with pain or suffering, which are forms of feeling bad.

It is closely related to value, desire and action: humans and other conscious animals find pleasure enjoyable, positive or worthy of seeking.

A great variety of activities may be experienced as pleasurable, like eating, sex, listening to music, or playing games.

Pleasure is part of various other mental states such as ecstacy, euphoria and flow.

Happiness and well-being  are closely related to pleasure but not identical with it.

There is no general agreement as to whether pleasure should be understood as a sensation, a quality of experiences, an attitude to experiences or otherwise.

Now for you.......

How do you define pleasure?

Set your timer 15 min and let go journal all ways you experience pleasure.

What is one simple thing you can do to invite more pleasure in your moments?

Envisioning the future/bucket list

A bit about Amy ........

"After nursing for over 20 years, primarily in the Critical Care setting, I found Nurse Coaching. Melding my years as a nurse with specialized coaching practices, I help my clients to become proactive with their health and well being. Unlike the "traditional" US model that treats the sick, I firmly believe that we can actively play a large part in controlling our futures by simple and realistic lifestyle changes. I have by no means "arrived" and am myself a continual work in progress. On a more personal note, I have been married for 28 years to my best friend, and we have an 8 year old daughter. We homeschool and are involved in a number of homeschool group activities. Our whole family loves adventure and the outdoors, and we moved to Durango three years ago primarily for the sunshine and outdoor options available to the area."

As ISH Membership grows, keeping up with scheduling your monthly visits is important.  To support you with this we will schedule your next visit at your appointment.  Bring your calendars with you to your visits and we will get you scheduled for the next month.

LEARNING

Here’s your weekly drop of health news, tips, and insights!

πŸ“° In the News

If you’re looking for research-backed ways to support your brain health with age, this new study is for you.

Based on brain scans of 40,000 UK Biobank participants over the age of 45, researchers examined 15 categories of risk factors for dementia. They looked at everything from smoking to sleep, weight, and exercise.

Results showed that the top 3 risk factors to most affect vulnerable areas of the brain were diabetes, traffic-related air pollution, and alcohol.

To me, that boils down to metabolic health and toxins, which impact whole body health.  From a cellular level toxins are impacting all downstream processes fueling inflammation.  Inflammation at the cellular level determines metabolic health or dis-ease.  You just can't separate these things AND you can shift your cellular physiology.  It is the moment to moment choices that have the biggest long term impact.

πŸ’‘Pro Health Tip

Looking for something different to drink that will support a healthy gut?

Try these!

🫚 Golden Milk

Golden milk gets its color from turmeric. It’s made by warming 2 cups of a milk (almond, coconut, macadamia.....) of your choice on the stove with 1 tsp of turmeric powder and any other spices or sweeteners to taste (cinnamon, ginger, cardamon, black pepper, vanilla, maple syrup, etc.) Turmeric has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to benefit the gut!

πŸ§‰ Kombucha

Kombucha is a fizzy fermented tea that can be purchased at the store or made at home (you’ll need a SCOBY for the fermentation process). It’s rich in B vitamins as well as probiotic bacteria to support the gut microbiome.

🍡 Green Tea

Green tea is rich in catechins, which are antioxidant polyphenols that have been shown to promote a healthy gut microbiome.

πŸ” Did You Know?

Hormonal balance (especially estrogen levels) can be directly linked to gut health. Poor gut health can lead to the recirculation of estrogens, estrogen dominance, and all of the problems that follow.

This is why we take a whole-body approach to all health conditionsβ€”especially those involving hormones!

Balancing hormones begins in the gut!
