Hello ,
The skies have finally opened up in Durango! The feeling of expansion is palpable. It seems people this week are walking around just a bit lighter. I know my garden is happy, especially my cucumber plant she is bursting!
Speaking of plants, I had the pleasure of attending a 2 day Herbal Medicine retreat in our own backyard Wisdom Of Herbs Gathering 2026, learning from local herbalists and practitioners. I was inspired to seek out something locally after attending a Solstice Retreat with Tieraona Low Dog, MD at the sacred Medicine Lodge in June. I am so humbled AND inspired to be learning the wisdom of plants from such wise healers.
I have always found ease and joy in my own garden, a place where I can be in relationship with nature rather than trying to control outcomes. It reminds me that growth happens in its own time and that tending, rather than forcing, is often where the magic lies. My garden is one place where I let go of the rules and can easily trust my intuition. I am excited to sprinkle in some new herb seeds from my recent courses and get to know these new plants!
This also brings me to another exciting event scheduled for ISH Members. Sept 1 Group Visit is a field trip at Animas Botanicals to tour this beautiful herbal farm. Put this on your calendar and stay tuned for details.

Nourishment Before Complexity |

Summer is one of my favorite times to talk about food. Not because of any particular protocol, but because of what's right in front of us this time of year.
The markets are full. The produce is bright. And nature is handing us one of the most powerful tools for gut health we have: variety.
|
|
|
|
What functional nutrition teaches us:
food isn't just energy
Food is medicine.
Food is connection.
Food is Information.
It signals our cells how to function, supports every system in our body, and connects us to each other and to the rhythms of the natural world. |

One of the simplest ways to let food do its best work?
Eat a wide variety of it.
Most of us rotate through the same 10–15 foods week after week. It feels easy and familiar, but our gut microbiome thrives on diversity. Eating locally and seasonally is one of the most natural ways to expand that variety without overthinking it. You get produce at peak nutrient density, and you're automatically rotating with the year.

And to help you see your own variety at a glance, we're sharing the Food & Spirit
50-Food 7-Day Tracker A simple, visual way to track what you're eating across the week.

Use the 50-Food 7-Day Tracker this week. Not to judge, just to notice. How much variety are you actually getting? You might be surprised by the patterns, and inspired by what's possible when you lead with abundance.
